[00:00:46] Speaker A: My team at the center for Client Safety has been asking me for about.
[00:00:51] Speaker B: Over a year to start a podcast.
But I wanted to be really thoughtful and intentional with it if I was.
[00:01:01] Speaker A: Going to do it.
[00:01:02] Speaker B: And so I took the time to really consider what this podcast needed to be.
[00:01:10] Speaker A: There is so much noise right now, especially around the subject of abortion.
[00:01:17] Speaker B: People have very strong feelings and very.
[00:01:24] Speaker A: Strong reactions on both sides of the issue.
[00:01:27] Speaker B: And since Roe versus Wade was overturned, it's come to the forefront of a lot of discussions, most of which are not productive or helpful.
[00:01:43] Speaker A: As many of you know, I am the president and CEO of an organization called the center for Client Safety. We investigate, report, and shut down dangerous abortion facilities.
[00:01:57] Speaker B: And one of the things that I love about our work is that our mission is something everyone can get behind, regardless of where people stand on abortion.
Almost everyone can agree that predatory medical practitioners with barely any training and running unsanitary facilities should not be practicing.
I have had multiple people tell me that they don't agree with me on abortion, but they understand and support what.
[00:02:42] Speaker A: I do at the center for Client Safety. What I and my team do at the center for Client Safety.
[00:02:49] Speaker B: When I tell them about the first.
[00:02:52] Speaker A: Abortionist we shut down, the 87 year.
[00:02:55] Speaker B: Old was shaking hands that was trying.
[00:02:58] Speaker A: To do surgical abortions on young women.
[00:03:02] Speaker B: They go, yeah, he shouldn't be practicing.
[00:03:06] Speaker A: Or I tell them that states like.
[00:03:10] Speaker B: Illinois completely deregulated their abortion facilities and the health department doesn't inspect them anymore, and they go, that's absurd and dangerous for women.
Yes, and I've been able to talk about our work in a way that engages people on the issue and in a way that's accessible to them.
We can find common ground and push for real health and safety standards and proper enforcement because we can all agree that dirty, unregulated, substandard abortion facilities should.
[00:04:02] Speaker A: Not be allowed to stay open.
[00:04:03] Speaker B: A foundational value that you will see across the board in our work shutting down abortion facilities is that we are bridge builders.
It's shown in how we build partnerships with local pro life communities, how we.
[00:04:24] Speaker A: Interact with the regulatory agencies, how we.
[00:04:28] Speaker B: Work with the legislators.
And that's what I want to do here as well.
I didn't want to do a true.
[00:04:40] Speaker A: Crime format podcast about the terrible abortion facilities and the abortionists that we investigate.
[00:04:47] Speaker B: And shut down so much of that type of content is already out there. And when I was looking at the.
[00:04:57] Speaker A: State of the pro life movement, and even in the broader sense, the state.
[00:05:02] Speaker B: Of our nation, it became clear to me that people are desperately looking for connections and respectful conversation.
And this has been evident in my.
[00:05:17] Speaker A: Own personal conversations with people in and.
[00:05:20] Speaker B: Outside of the pro life movement. There's a growing distaste for the villainization.
[00:05:27] Speaker A: Of those who don't agree with us.
[00:05:29] Speaker B: On every single thing, and reducing people's.
[00:05:33] Speaker A: Lives and experiences to their views on.
[00:05:36] Speaker B: Abortion really isn't helpful. And again, that goes both ways.
As the nation gets more and more divided, there are more and more people who find themselves somewhere in the middle, in the center, looking around for others who can have reasonable, empathetic, and nuanced conversations.
Because that's where hearts change. And that's what I want to do here as well.
[00:06:17] Speaker A: I didn't want to do a true crime format podcast about the terrible abortion facilities and the abortionists we investigate and shut down.
[00:06:28] Speaker B: So much of that content is already out there.
[00:06:32] Speaker A: And when I was looking at the state of the pro life movement, and even in the broader sense, the state.
[00:06:38] Speaker B: Of our nation, it became clear to me that people are desperately looking for connections.
[00:06:48] Speaker A: They're looking for a place to have respectful, thoughtful conversations.
This has been evident in my own personal conversations with people in and outside.

[00:07:06] Speaker B: On every single thing. And people no longer want to reduce others to their views on abortion. And that goes both ways.
And as the nation is becoming more and more divided, there are more and more in this group of people who find themselves somewhere in the middle, in the center, looking around for others who can have reasonable, empathetic, nuanced conversations, because that is where hearts change.
[00:07:46] Speaker A: So I wanted to take our theme.
[00:07:47] Speaker B: Of bridge building and continue it into this podcast by creating space for humans.
[00:07:57] Speaker A: To have connections with other humans.
[00:08:01] Speaker B: Not philosophers, not news pundits.
We're just normal people trying to navigate a complicated subject that brings up a lot of pain and emotion.
There are a lot of controversial subjects in the world, but there is something about abortion that triggers a different level of reactions.
[00:08:34] Speaker A: I am yet to see it duplicated.
[00:08:36] Speaker B: In any other human rights issue. In the same way, it brings out our strongest feelings, our deepest grief, our hottest anger, truly our worst selves.
[00:08:54] Speaker A: So how do we make space for that?
Can we ground the conversation so that.
[00:09:01] Speaker B: It kind of turns the volume of everything down and we can actually hear each other.
I want to try.
But I do want to be clear.
I am not under the illusion that I will do it perfectly.
[00:09:17] Speaker A: I am trying to navigate a complicated subject like everyone else. And I'll probably say something you disagree.
[00:09:24] Speaker B: With at some point, but that's the point. It's okay.
[00:09:29] Speaker A: We are not the sum of our differences.
[00:09:32] Speaker B: We are powerful partners who encompass a.
[00:09:38] Speaker A: Diverse spectrum of beliefs.
[00:09:40] Speaker B: And there are some things so egregious that despite our differences, we can come together.
And that is shutting down dangerous abortion facilities that can't meet basic medical standards.
So here we are, the centered podcast.
[00:10:03] Speaker A: And I'm very excited about the amazing conversations and challenging discussions that will come out of this.
